It is the faithful adaptation of the homonymous novel by South African writer J. M. Coetzee (The Nobel Prize for Literature 2003), published in 1999.

A university professor, excluded from his post because of his intimate relationship with one of his students, settled at his daughter's house in an isolated farm in eastern South Africa. They were subjected to an aggression revealing the violence prevailing in the anarchic country of the post-apartheid period and he was helpless in the rape of his daughter. He then became aware of his impotence to act on the world and saw his hedonic convictions shaken.
